Features and maintenance of the shed

Depending on the type of material we choose, we will have to perform one type of maintenance or another, so it is very important to be clear about our preferences before making the investment.

Garden sheds made of resin and metal do not require maintenance, so they are a great choice if we are looking for a product that requires little work. If we know in advance that we do not want to spend time maintaining the walls and floor, then you should buy a shed made of these materials.

Furthermore, it is also important to consider the following features…

Material of the Shed

All the models we have indicated are multipurpose, meaning they serve to store materials, machines, devices, and gardening tools. Depending on the chosen version and brand, you will get a place that perfectly fits your garden. There are basic metal sheds and top-of-the-range sheds with very neat finishes and a modern aesthetic. The latter look perfect in residential green areas.

If you buy a wooden shed, you must perform maintenance every year. Wood, being a porous material, needs a layer of varnish and anti-mite treatment to prevent deterioration. Although most of them come with this treatment from the factory, it is important to maintain them after 1 or 2 years to prolong their life and keep them looking new. If you buy untreated wood, you will inevitably have to apply fungicide or insecticide and then a layer of varnish or paint to prevent the growth of fungi, mould, and insect pests, as well as protect it from moisture.

Resin sheds are somewhat unattractive in some cases, although there are others that are spectacular. In many cases, they are much cheaper than metal ones, but the price is influenced by the brand, size, and of course the quality. The advantages of PVC, composite, or resin sheds are that they withstand temperature changes very well, are waterproof, and if the material is of good quality, they will not be damaged by the sun.

Metal sheds are usually used as shelters to store gardening tools and machinery. Their aesthetic is not as modern as PVC ones and less rustic than wooden ones, but they have the advantage of being quite cheap. The downside is that for green or landscaped areas, they can clash quite a bit if they are in plain sight. One option to improve their aesthetic is to partially hide them with a thatched roof or artificial grass. This way, they look much nicer, and their metallic appearance does not clash as much with your leisure space. If you use it for a country house with land, it will work wonders, as well as for industrial buildings and farming areas. Most are made of galvanized steel sheet to lighten the weight while giving them robustness. The structure is usually steel (see the characteristics of each model).

The advantages of metal garden sheds are their maintenance. They only need to be cleaned with a cloth like you would any other type of metal, or with a hose, being careful not to get water inside. They have an anti-corrosion treatment.

Floor

It is very important to know if they have a floor. Outdoor wooden sheds always include it, resin ones in most cases, and metal ones do not unless stated in the product description. Sometimes the floor is built with steel guides that leave the ground exposed. You can add the shed floor as an accessory if you need it.

Assembly

All come with instructions, but in some cases, the task can be complicated. Assembling a garden shed is not too difficult, but if you are not very handy and are afraid of spending several hours tightening screws and fitting boards, resin sheds are the easiest to assemble.

Dimensions

Think in advance about the use you will give the shed. All the equipment you will store, the tools, and if you plan to use it to store old appliances or all the equipment for pruning and garden care.

We must always be realistic with the space we have and the space we need.

Here also individual needs play a big role. Within the categories, you will find large and small sheds, 1 metre, 2, 3, and many more.

Ideally, think carefully about the things we will store in it as mentioned above. The total and usable size will be determined if we use it as a garage, to store tools, or as a play area in case of buying a shed for children.

In any case, just as we mentioned in the design section, it is good to buy the shed we like the most. With size, it will be similar. It is better that it is a little bigger than too small because if so, it is likely that in a short time it will no longer serve us as we had thought when it is completely full.

How to calculate the size of the shed

The measurements expressed in m2 (square metres) that we are going to indicate can serve as a guide, but to know exactly the size of the shed you are going to buy, you will need to consider all the material you want to store.

Size of the Shed Recommended Use
5 m2 or less Store garden tools, small appliances, car tools.
10 m2 or less Larger gardening tools, lawnmower, brush cutter, hedge trimmer. You can also add a small table to do some work outside the house, store bicycles, etc.
15 m2 or less Store old sofas, tables, fairly large garden tools, pool equipment, loungers, umbrellas, etc.
20 m2 or more Sufficient space for any type of use, from storing machinery, using it as a garage or as an independent room in the garden. From this size, it is considered a large room of a common house, such as a garage for motorcycles and bikes, car, etc.

Installation

  • Look for a firm and flat surface that does not tend to form puddles.
  • It is advisable to install the shed on concrete or tiles, avoiding having the floor directly on the ground or grass. If you do not have a solid surface, you can buy a pre-installation kit for the shed floor.
  • Do not install it close to the wall. Ideally, there should be 30 to 50 cm of separation between the shed and the walls or plant hedges. This will prevent moisture and deterioration from being in constant contact with water.

Which shed to buy?

Sale of sheds, where to buy

The choice is always subjective, although we must adhere to our needs. If you want to buy a shed that lasts a lifetime, it is best to acquire a wooden or metal one as these materials are very durable. They can withstand the passage of time without problems, lasting decades with minimal maintenance.

If, on the other hand, you are looking for something cheaper, you can opt for resin. This material is lightweight, but at the same time tough against impacts; however, it may deteriorate over time unless it is of a good brand. Plastic, when exposed to the elements, loses colour, and its attractive appearance degrades if it is not of high quality. Nevertheless, many models last a lifetime without losing their appearance.

If the shed is for indoor use, you will have no problems with this material. You only need to be cautious if it is exposed to the sun for many hours during the day, in which case, the best choice would be a wooden shed or, if you will not be inside, a metal shed.

The differences between wooden and metal sheds are their insulation properties. The former retains temperature better, protecting from cold and heat, while metal sheds have greater temperature variation unless thermal insulation is added.

Modern or Classic

Modern garden sheds have a more stylish exterior design, adding a touch to the decoration of the green area. However, both modern and classic sheds are equally functional. Choosing one type or the other will be influenced by personal tastes.

What we can say is that modern-style sheds look very good near homes, ensuring that their design does not contrast too much with the garden or the stone structure of the house.

Classic garden sheds usually have straighter lines. Almost everyone imagines the typical metal shed of all time, although today, even metal ones have much nicer designs than in the past.

We recommend that you buy the one you like the most, considering the price and dimensions, as well as the features we have suggested. If the model you like is a bit more expensive and you can afford it, do not skimp, as it is a product that lasts many years.
