In the online catalogue of prefabricated wooden chicken coops, there are many models and sizes available, the most common being those adapted for placement in the garden or an area adjacent to the chalet or country house. You can install them in a small plot to get fresh and totally healthy eggs by controlling the feeding of your chickens.

All these coops are portable, meaning you can assemble and disassemble them at any time, moving the chicken house to another location whenever you wish.

Among the models we have indicated are those with the highest quality, best reviews, and most positive ratings from people who are dedicated to raising laying hens. You can also use them as a chick growth area.

Large, XXL, and simple wooden chicken coops

To make it clearer which one might be the best purchase, we will indicate the characteristics of each of them.

Wooden chicken house

This first model is the best-selling on Amazon, being quite economical. The wooden chicken coop is priced under €100, so it’s a real opportunity to get your chicken house for Gallus domesticus at a very low cost.

This coop is made of pine and fir wood, with two separate areas. At the bottom, there is an outdoor space with a fence, so the chickens can go out and peck, and at the top, there is a protected area where they can sleep and rest.

The advantage of this wooden chicken house model is that it is very cheap, providing space for 4 or 5 chickens. If you squeeze them, you could fit more, although we do not recommend it. Even if you lower the number, they will thank you.

The drawbacks we find with this coop is the assembly. It requires patience and some skill since the assembly instructions are somewhat poor, but with time you can assemble it and leave it perfect.

Small chicken coop

With two separate areas, one uncovered and a high covered area to protect from the cold and rain, the small wooden chicken coop is perfect for a maximum of 4 chickens. If possible, a pair would be comfortable.

It includes a wooden drawer to remove droppings, a covered house accessed by a ramp, and a roof covered with water-repellent felt.

Disadvantages: this model is made of wood and, although the product specifications indicate that it is solid pine wood, in reality, it is not. We recommend giving it a coat of varnish or moisture-proof treatment if you are going to have it permanently outdoors without protection.

Advantages: the price. It is the cheapest rustic chicken coop model, costing even less than the previous one. To start raising chickens, it can be a good option.

Handmade simple chicken coop

Robust and practical, this chicken coop is simple, eco-friendly, and made from FSC-certified pine wood, a certification issued by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). It is resistant to moisture and decay.

See price

Disadvantages: no covered area. It has no roof. The entire enclosure is unprotected from the rain. The price of the wooden chicken coop is higher than the previous ones, but its quality is also higher.

Advantages: high-quality wood, includes lock and latch, and features galvanised steel mesh. Additionally, it has plenty of space.

Large wooden chicken coop

This model is the largest of all we are analysing and is the most complete. It has a covered area, roost, tray to remove droppings, and egg-laying nest. It has everything necessary to keep chickens healthy.

It can house up to 12 chickens, although we recommend using it for a maximum of 6, and if you see there is enough space, add one or two more.

Made of wood, with a metal fence to delimit its perimeter, this chicken coop is large and spacious, with treated materials to ensure its durability.

The roof is lined with waterproof material. It repels rainwater, causing it to run off the sides thanks to its dual-pitched roof.

Disadvantages: it is the most expensive, and some slats may come with splinters.

Advantages: very complete, includes laying nest, perch, or roosting bar, and covered area. The assembly is simple and well-explained in the instructions.

The most complete wooden chicken coop in our comparison!

Wooden structure house

An economical version of a wooden chicken house. The product has high slats, reaching up to 2 metres in height with a width and depth of 1.5 metres.

Disadvantages: basic model. It does not include accessories and equipment, only the fenced enclosure for the chicken coop.

Advantages: very cheap price. FSC-certified wood, galvanised steel mesh, and a roof to protect against rain.

If you want to buy a large and cheap wooden chicken coop, this is a great opportunity!

Advantages: cheap price. Takes up little space. Includes roof and removable tray.

XXL Wooden Chicken Coops

The most common ones are those with space for up to 8 adult chickens, although there are also those suitable for 20 or 50 chickens, in which case their size makes them an XXL wooden chicken coop, obviously much larger and with extensive dimensions.

If you are looking for a wooden coop for 20 or more Gallus domesticus individuals, we propose the following options:

How many chickens can I put in the wooden coop?

There are many theories about the usable space each chicken should have in our coop, but we recommend not skimping. The more space, the better they will be.

Ideally, do not put more than 3 or 4 chickens per square metre, although up to 10 can be placed per 1.6 m2. The final decision is yours, and the number of eggs and quality of meat, if you use them for human consumption, will be directly related to the conditions they live in. If you have any doubts, you can check all our guides and sections in our main category where we talk about and explain everything related to chicken coops.

If this is your first wooden chicken coop, it is best to start slowly. Add a couple of chickens to gain experience and find what dimensions are right for you. The size of the coop also influences the cleaning frequency, if you have chicks, roosters, and if the chickens are layers or only used for meat.

The answer is somewhat variable, but that’s the reality. There are farms where the animals are cramped and pens with plenty of space.
